Youth Assemblies Selected for Scale-Up at Paris Peace Forum

This November, at Paris Peace Forum, the Oslo Center was selected among 716 applicants to showcase our Youth Assemblies Project. Together with 113 other innovative and engaging projects, we presented our bottom-up locally anchored Youth Assemblies concept.  The Paris Peace Forum hosted 7,000 participants from 140 countries including 33 heads of state over the two days.

At stand D105 – the Oslo Center project team pitched the unique approach of the Youth Assemblies, presenting the current scale-up efforts and its global potential. Our stand had a constant flow of people wanting to learn more about the concept, and how the concept initiated by the Mombasa Youth Assembly has become a recognized arena for youth participation on the coast of Kenya. Mombasa Youth Assembly was represented in the Project Team, sharing key success stories and accomplishments that the Youth Assembly approach has brought forward. Currently, the Oslo Center together with MYA are assisting the establishment of Youth Assemblies in the two additional counties in Kenya, Kwale and Lamu.

During the closing ceremony of the Conference, after two successful days filled with energy and very interesting and fruitful conversations, the Paris Peace Forum Scale-Up Committee announced the 10 most promising governance project that would be part of the Scale-Up initiative for 2020. This honour includes proactive support and mentorship in the year to come. The Oslo Center were very humbled and honoured that the Youth Assemblies concept was announced as one of the 10 selected projects! We look very much forward to becoming a part of the Paris Peace Forum community, and continuing the engagement in the year to come. At next year’s Paris Peace Forum, our scale-up progress will be presented and assessed. The unique approach of the concept allows for it to be adapted to any context where it is requested.

It is with great pleasure and sincere appreciation we are looking forward to sharing this concept with youth in other countries with the support from Paris Peace Forum.

Paris Peace Forum 13.-14. November 2019!

Paris Peace Forum is an international event that aims to work towards peace through multilateral work and global governance. The conference is an annual event held in mid-November. By focusing on 6 highlighted themes; peace and security, development, environment, new technologies, inclusive economy and culture and education, Paris Peace Forum wishes to provide necessary measures towards peace. The initiative of the Forum was brought up by French President Emanuel Macron at the Meeting of Ambassadors in 2017. The Forum’s purpose was to both mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day and seek to bring together global governance actors in an international open space in order to interact, discuss and generate concrete solutions.

During the 2019 conference 114 projects are chosen to showcase their governance projects. The Paris Peace Forum works as an incubator to advance those projects and illustrates that it is possible to improve the collective response to global challenges in a deteriorated international environment. By the third day of the Forum, 10 projects are selected as Scale-Up projects to receive mentorship and support from the Paris Peace Forum for a one-year period.
