International day for Persons with Disabilities 2024
On December 3, 2024, The Oslo Center joined key stakeholders at the Kenya School of Government, Nairobi, to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The event, organized by the Consortium of Disabled Persons Organizations in Kenya (CDPOK) and supported by The Oslo Center, featured powerful keynote speeches from leaders who emphasized the urgent need for inclusive governance, political representation, and accessibility in democratic processes.
Discussions centered around policy reforms, political inclusion, and advocacy strategies to strengthen the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making. Key takeaways included calls for legislative action, such as passing the Persons with Disabilities Bill 2023, ensuring PWD representation in political parties, and increasing budgetary allocations for disability-inclusive policies. Panels featuring political leaders and disability rights advocates reinforced the importance of engaging political parties, enhancing leadership opportunities, and advocating for structural reforms to eliminate barriers to full participation.
This event reaffirmed The Oslo Center’s commitment to promoting inclusive democracy by ensuring that persons with disabilities have a voice in governance. Through continued collaboration with stakeholders, we aim to advance policy implementation, civic engagement, and equitable representation in political spaces.
