Dialogue meetings in Bishkek
The Oslo Center conducted dialogue meetings with government officials in Bishkek 16-18th of April concerning conditions for freedom of religion- or belief in the country. Meetings were held with Deputy Minister of Justice, Deputy Minister of Education, Deputy Speaker in the parliament as well as Parliamentarians, the Ombudsman, the President’s Office and the State Agency on Religious Affairs.
The meetings were held in an open and positive atmosphere and views and assessments on the current situation concerning freedom of religion- of belief were exchanged. The Oslo Center expressed concerns regarding current legislation which entails some provisions and recent amendments restricting freedom of religion or belief for religious communities in the country, as well as to a draft law on religious education and schools.The draft law, in its current draft form, is not in line with Kyrgyzstan’s international human rights obligations, and views were exchanged on aspects pertaining to state regulations of private religious education and schools. The conversations were constructive and informative, and have prepared the ground for further cooperation.
